Following the launch of the Validium EAP in January 2009, it proved so popular that 20 per cent of the workforce chose to take advantage of the round-the-clock access to telephone counsellors and the network of face-to-face counsellors and information specialists, for support with emotional, health, financial, legal and childcare/eldercare concerns. Since then the quantity and complexity of cases that the RCN is being asked to support has substantially increased, because of mounting pressure on the public sector, and, as a result, the proportion of staff calling the EAP has soared to 40 per cent. This is exactly what we want to see, since 79 per cent of those using the service reported reduced stress levels.
